Position Purpose



The Assistant Director for Academic Enrichment & Learning in the Academic Skills Center (ASC) collaborates closely with all ASC team members in creating and realizing the vision of the Center. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for overseeing the Peer Tutoring Program, which entails partnering with a range of academic departments and programs. The Assistant Director is knowledgeable of academic support high impact practices and supports tutors in planning, organizing, and implementing active/collaborative learning techniques and strategies in small group and individual tutoring sessions. In addition, the Assistant Director provides individual academic coaching with a focus on supporting upper-level students. Moreover, this role creates, promotes, and facilitates the provision of learning enhancement services and programming dedicated to the academic enrichment of Dartmouth College's undergraduate student community.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors plus 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities



  • Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience in one or more of the following educational areas: teaching, advising, counseling, assessment, peer tutoring, or academic enrichment and learning.

  • Excellent interpersonal, group leadership, and written and verbal communications skills.

  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, problem solving, project management, presentation, team-building, and collaboration skills.

  • Strong understanding of student development theory.

  • Tact and discretion for dealing with sensitive &/or confidential matters.

  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's Degree, with an emphasis in academic advising, counseling, education, or student affairs.

  • Professional experience in a higher education setting.

  • Staff supervision experience.

  • Formal training and accreditation in academic coaching.

  • Experience managing a CRLA certified tutoring program.

Description



Peer Tutoring Program

  • Manages the Peer Tutoring Program: recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of tutors.

  • Revises tutor training and continuing education regularly with current best practices in higher education and peer learning.

  • In collaboration with team members, delivers tutor training with a focus on leadership development, multicultural competency, and academic mentoring.

  • Prepares term and annual assessment of the Peer Tutoring Program and uses data to inform the development of peer academic enrichment offerings.

Academic Coaching & Learning Strategies Workshops

  • Serves a diverse student population, coaching and advising individuals and communities of undergraduate students on learning strategies, with a focus on the academic development of upper-level students.

  • Coordinates, initiates, and conducts specific outreach to undergraduate students, including academically underprepared, low-income, first-generation, and students of Color.

  • Responsible for delivering learning strategy programs and workshops and presentations, working with the Program Coordinator for logistical support.

Representation & Cross Campus Collaboration

  • Collaborates with campus colleagues (e.g., Undergraduate Dean's Office, Student Accessibility Services, Office of Pluralism and Leadership, First Generation Office, Pre-Health Advising, Athletics, and Residential Life) to create and provide holistic support and programming based on current student needs.

  • Communicates with faculty, students, and staff to solicit feedback and recommendations related to enhancing student learning.

  • Represents Dartmouth on various committees, in professional associations, and at designated professional conferences.

  • Advances and increases digital outreach to promote student learning such as the tutoring and academic strategy pages of the ASC website, Facebook, Instagram, and office blog. Primary responsibility for office blog.

Supervisory

  • Supervises 1-3 undergraduate student and/or graduate student interns.

  • In collaboration with the Associate Director and Assistant Director for First Year & Student Transitions, is responsible for the supervision and development of a caseload of tutors on a termly basis.
