Job Summary



The Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor to teach in its undergraduate program. Candidates are sought who can teach all areas of our undergraduate curriculum with an emphasis on aerospace computing, systems engineering and aerospace vehicle design, senior capstone design, spacecraft dynamics, and/or propulsion.



While Teaching Assistant Professor (Instructor) is the anticipated hiring rank, Teaching Associate Professor (Senior Instructor) or Teaching Professor (Principal Instructor) ranks may be considered based on experience and qualifications. The person hired into this position will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service. The position is anticipated to start in Fall 2024 but may start as soon as January 2024.

Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession. Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Practical Innovation Through Learning, Observation, and Teaching (PILOT) Laboratory and design projects alongside expert faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be



Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. A successful candidate in this position will typically teach 5 courses during the academic year. This position typically includes an effort allocation of 80% teaching and 20% service, although allocations may vary based appointment. Research is typically not included in this position unless related to engineering education.

What We Can Offer



  • The anticipated salary range for this position at the Teaching Assistant Professor rank is $88,000 - $94,000 academic year salary.

  • Qualified candidates will be considered for Teaching Associate Professor or Teaching Professor appointments. The full salary range is $88,000 - $110,000 dependent on rank.

  • A relocation stipend is available within CEAS guidelines.

What We Require



  • PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or a MS degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field with 4 years of experience.

  • For a candidate to be considered for appointment to the Teaching Associate Professor rank, the applicant must also have 6 years of teaching in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field at a higher education level.

  • For a candidate to be considered for an appointment to the Teaching Professor rank they must hold a record of distinction and undergo a successful review by the College of Engineering and Applied Science's PIRC committee.

What You Will Need



  • Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Specific areas of interest include aerospace computing, system engineering and aerospace vehicle design, senior capstone design, spacecraft dynamics, and/or propulsion.

  • An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly is required.

  • Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Candidates with prior university teaching experience in a relevant field and years of industry experience in a relevant field are encouraged to apply. Relevant fields are aerospace, aeronautics, astronautical engineering, or closely related fields.
