Position Summary



The Student Athlete Mentoring Program is part of the Student Athlete Resource Center's Life Skills & Student Athlete Development Program. Student Athlete Mentors provide extra academic support to student-athletes to improve their retention and graduation rates.



Student Athlete mentors meet with each of their assigned students at least once a week to review their academic progress. In these meetings, the mentor discusses and reviews the student's academic progress by reviewing their coursework, syllabi, study skills, time management, class attendance, assignments, and tests. Mentors may also provide tutoring as needed.



Mentors report their students' academic progress, meeting attendance, and other pertinent information to the full-time SARC staff.



FLSA: Non-Exempt



Anticipated Hiring Range: $21.72 per hour, anticipated hire is at the minimum of the classification salary range



CSU Classification Salary Range: $21.72 per hour - $26.56 per hour

Work Hours: This is a part-time hourly position, at 5 to 20 hours per week depending on case load. Working hours are anticipated primarily between 8am - 1pm, Monday - Friday.



Department Information



Student Athlete Recourse Center (SARC) is responsible for assisting student-athletes in their transition to Sacramento State. Our office becomes the primary resource for student-athletes as we focus on academic advising, NCAA eligibility, mentoring, and retention and graduation efforts.



Minimum Qualifications



Knowledge and Abilities:



Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; and the techniques and methods of interviewing.



Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.



Experience:



None required.



Education:



Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.



Required Qualifications



Knowledge and Abilities: * Ability to provide effective student services such as advising, tutoring, counseling, or other related duties in a college setting.


  • Ability to interact professionally and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff and administrators.

  • Effective communication skills in-person, on the phone and via online systems.

  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism while providing direct service to students, even in difficult situations.

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
