Job description: Creighton University is seeking to hire an Assistant Director for Academic Support and Retention in Student Support Services (SSS). This is a full time in person role that is salaried.
The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating all supplementary academic support programs for SSS program participants and leads a team-based proactive approach to intrusive interventions to aid in student success and retention.
Collaborate with University faculty, The Success Center, and Academic departments for tutor training, supplemental instruction, and other university-related academic support partnerships. Coordinating with the undergraduate colleges on the academic advising and course registration for all SSS students; managing the STAR Retention program for students on academic probation; communicating with the Office of Student and Family Support on specific student concerns and supporting retention initiative. Co-teaching a section of TSC 125: Student Support Services Strategies for Success and College Transition.
The Assistant Director is also responsible for the implementation, oversight, and reporting of federal requirements for this grant funded position and its specific program. They also serve as an academic coach to an assigned cohort of SSS students and perform other duties as specified by supervisor.
The TRIO Student Support Services (a federal grant funded program) at Creighton University provides academic support and assistance to facilitate persistence towards graduation for 160 students from low-income, first- generation backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Services include academic assistance, tutoring, financial aid advisement, career counseling, and graduate school assistance. Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and supervise peer tutoring and supplemental instruction initiatives, develop procedures to recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate the peer tutors and supplemental instructors. Arrange and schedule tutoring sessions for SSS participants and provide ongoing documentation of these activities in compliance with federal grant regulations. With assistance from student intern and/or graduate assistant, monitor and review expenditures for tutoring services within the SSS budget and process time sheets for all tutors. Develop partnerships with faculty to host satellite offices within SSS. Regularly confer with faculty about course content and student progress to meet the academic needs of students. Attends classes as necessary.
- Coordinate the development plan, implementation, management, and evaluation of retention initiatives that provide both early warning and the necessary resources to foster student academic persistence and success. Collaborates with campus partners in coordination and utilization of needs assessments/data, monitors SSS participants? academic progress, and utilizes individualized educational plans/academic goals to remediate academic deficiencies and enhance academic strengths. Co-teach TSC 125: Student Support Services Strategies for Success and College Transition.
- Provide individualized coaching sessions and documentation for assigned students from SSS; this includes supplemental academic advising career and graduate school planning, financial literacy and FAFSA completion, academic study skills support, student tracking, intervention and monitoring, guidance and personal counseling, and referrals to appropriate university and community resources to help students attain their life and educational goals.
- Master?s degree in education, counseling, student affairs, or related fields preferred.
- Experience in science or math tutoring field is preferred. Previous training or accreditation in supplemental instruction is a plus.
- Two years of experience in related activities (such as mentoring and working directly with high school and/or college student populations, student advising or student programming, program development, teaching, counseling, and knowledge of the issues and challenges facing first-generation and low-income students in higher education).
- The ability and willingness to work a varying schedule that includes evenings and occasional weekends.
- Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
