Job description:
  • To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas, information media, and technology resources;
  • To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of electronic and traditional information;
  • To instill a love of learning and reading in all students and ensure equitable access to electronic and traditional information;
  • To collaborate with classroom teachers, the information media coordinator, other district coordinators, and instructional coaches to design and implement lessons and units of instruction to assess student learning and instructional effectiveness;
  • To provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school information media program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school, the school district, Illinois State Library, and the State of Illinois and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Illinois State Educator License in teaching field
  • Bachelor?s Degree in Library Science, Master?s in Library Science, or Library Science endorsement (including middle school)
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of the school staff

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following are essential fundamentals to include but not limited to the following job duties.)

Leader:
  • Supervise activities and maintain materials, both traditional and electronic, for the Library Information Media Centers (IMC) in buildings containing middle school students. As well as, provide an efficient organization for effective use by students and teachers.
  • Participate in curriculum development and organizational activities through the building faculty, community groups, professional learning communities, and task forces.
  • Inspire the use and enjoyment of the IMC by students, teachers, and staff.
  • Coordinate efforts with instructional coaches and other district or building coordinators.
Instructional Partner:
  • Work closely with teachers to coordinate electronic and traditional materials, technology resources, and educational activities with the curriculum and the classroom program.
  • Select, circulate, and promote print, non-print, and electronic resources. In so doing, the middle school media specialist must seek recommendations from teachers, staff, and students, as well as use appropriate selection tools and professional resources to preview materials before purchase.
  • Work with the principal and the information media coordinator in planning expenditures, programming, goals for expected student behavior, and expansion of the facilities as needed.
  • Provide opportunities for students, staff, and teachers to produce and use electronic and traditional materials for instructional purposes.
Information Specialist:
  • In accordance with district policy, develop and maintain a collection of electronic and traditional materials and technology resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, the teaching styles, and instructional strategies used within the school building.
  • Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual electronic and traditional property, and assist users with their understanding and observance of the same.
  • Organize and promote the entire electronic and traditional collection for maximum and effective use.
Teacher:
  • Promote reading as a source of enjoyment for all students, staff, and teachers, as well as make available electronic and traditional materials and technology resources which encourage reading.
  • Teach students, both informally and in class situations, to use traditional and technological tools and resources available in the IMC.
  • Assist students as needed in the location, evaluation and interpretation of electronic and traditional materials and technology resources of all types.
  • Provide Information Media orientation programs for students, staff, and teachers.
  • Use a variety of strategies to make teachers, staff, and students aware of the electronic and traditional materials and technology resources which are available within the IMC.
  • Promote the use of technology in the IMC to provide students with the necessary skills needed to become lifelong learners in the 21st century.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Wages, terms, and conditions of employment pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between the Decatur Education Association and the Decatur Public Schools #61 Board of Education.

EVALUATION: Each employee in contractual continuing service shall be evaluated in accordance with Illinois School Code. Each employee not in continuing contractual service shall be evaluated once every year.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. This position will daily be required to read, write, type, handle and manipulate fingers in performing the essential duties of the job. The position must have a valid driver?s license and may be required to drive to school sites on a daily basis.

Mental Demands: The middle school media specialist must ensure that children are supervised at all times, and that children are involved in safe and appropriate activities. There may be a number of situations happening at once, and the middle school media specialist must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The middle school media specialist will be working in a busy and occasionally noisy environment. There may be a number of activities and situations happening at once, and the middle school media specialist will have to supervise all students at all times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be required to work at multiple district locations as necessary.
