Job description: Reports To: Director of Project ACT, 205 Days, Grant funded through June 2024



Implements the guidelines and procedures established for homeless students by working cooperatively with the project manager, the schools, and shelter sites in assessing and implementing academic instruction and interventions in reading, language arts, and math and related duties.

Responsibilities


  • Implements the guidelines and procedures established for homeless students.

  • Works cooperatively with the project manager, the schools, and shelter sites.

  • Assesses and implements academic instruction and interventions in reading, language arts, and math.

  • Provides direct instruction and guidance to ensure homeless students (Grades 9- 12) are in attendance and able to succeed academically and complete school assignments at building level.

  • Assess and address the SEL needs of homeless students.

  • Assist in helping families acquire basic resources to facilitate youth?s well-being and attendance

  • Assist in resolving transportation issues

  • Assist in resolving attendance issues

  • Interacting with parents to help resolve issues that interfere with their children?s education

  • Recognize and address students I mental health crisis

  • Recognize and address child neglect and abuse while taking appropriate actions.

  • Create and fortify relationships with administration, teachers, shelter staff and community partners for the benefit of homeless children.

  • Assess attendance and educational records for recommendation to the SST Process

  • Serve on the SST as advocates for homeless children

  • Coordinates supplemental activities for homeless students and their families at school as well as at non-traditional settings after school hours.

  • Attends all scheduled Project ACT activities, meetings and participates in CMSD staff development workshops on literacy, math, and other academic subjects as well as on the issues affecting homeless students as requested.

  • Maintains accurate records and documentation and completes all required reports.

  • May be required to work at a non-traditional setting or school.

  • Knowledgeable and able to implement guidelines of the McKinney-Vento Act.

Qualifications

  • College Degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology or related field.

  • Experience working with children in an urban setting.

  • Experience working with homeless children and their families.

  • Knowledge of Cleveland Metropolitan School District policies, regulations, structure and school setting.

  • Familiarity with the community and working in a community setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse setting with CMSD students, parents, teachers, student interns, and the community.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a non-traditional setting such as a homeless or domestic violence shelter, library, community center varied hours.

  • Willingness to work a varied schedule in a non-traditional setting if requested.

  • May be available for assignment during summer months in a shelter or non-traditional setting if funding is available.

  • Demonstrated innovation and creativity working with at-risk students.

  • Willingness to travel to and between various sites.

  • Computer literate.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

  • Expected moving, walking and standing consistent with an office environment and occasionally lifting up to 15 pounds.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is frequently required to interact with parents, teachers and administrators.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a normal school/shelter/community environment.

  • Local travel may be required for training/meetings and various work sites.
