Job description: The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance is a co-governed department granting separate undergraduate BA degrees in Theatre Arts and Dance. Theatre Arts and Dance share performance facilities and production faculty and staff (Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager, and Master Electrician). Design and implementation of curricular and co-curricular goals reside, for the most part, within the individual Programs. The Theatre Arts Program also houses an MFA program in Performance Pedagogy which began in Fall 2019. The Department is strongly committed to the Mission of the University and has a special concern for issues of social justice and the dialogue between faith, culture, and the arts.
The Department serves a diverse population of students. The Theatre Arts Program serves over 260 majors, as well as Theatre Arts minors, and the general student population. Students and faculty come from increasingly diverse backgrounds: ethnic, socio-economic, sexual orientation, and age, among others. Required qualifications include:
- MFA in Playwriting
- Experience in playwriting and development, including professional productions of new work.
- Experience teaching at the university/college level.
- Evidence of a research/creative agenda and a body of creative work.
- Experience with and commitment to teaching, advising, and supervising students.
- MFA in Playwriting or PhD with an emphasis on the history, practice, and craft of playwriting
- Experience writing for other media, including but not limited to film, television, and the web
- Experience transforming literature, oral histories, etc. into plays
- Experience teaching a diverse population
- Demonstrated commitment to mentorship of young writers
- Strength and potential for excellence and leadership with community engagement and university services
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality.
- A strong, documented commitment to furthering the DEI mission of the department and university by centering the lives and experiences of BIPOC and LGBTIQA+ individuals in teaching, scholarship/research, and creative practice.
- Preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach courses that integrate diverse cultures, content, and issues, and who are able to teach students from a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds.
Tenured and tenure-track positions in the Theatre Arts program typically teach three (3) courses each semester, with a reduced course load in the first-year and the possibility of additional summer teaching. This position will:
Teach courses in playwriting, writing for film, TV, solo performance, new work, theatre for young audiences, literature to stage, and other courses according to the appointee?s areas of expertise and the Department?s needs. Serve as Academic Advisor for Theatre majors (between 25 and 30 every semester) starting in the second year of appointment, with the possibility of mentoring graduate students in our M.F.A. program. Mentor undergraduate students, preparing them for graduate school and professional work in theatre and film/television, new media and those selected for the department?s signature New Works Festival. Maintain ongoing creative and scholastic work. These include but are not limited to: professional and university theatre productions of new and existing work, attendance and presentation at academic and professional conferences, publications in popular press, commercial venues, and academic publications. The department and university recognize that creative and scholastic work are inseparable in our discipline and encourages applicants seeking retention, tenure, and promotion to explain the value of a chosen venue for the dissemination of said work. The university also places high value on faculty who are able to involve students in their scholarly and creative work. We are looking for an active, prolific teacher/scholar/artist. Serve on department, college, and university committees. Membership and service in professional organizations.
In addition to the above, an ideal candidate would be a collaborator who would work in close partnership with the department?s production staff, faculty, and students to ensure the success of the department?s production season and process. The ideal candidate would also be a mentor to undergraduate students both in matters pertaining to the department and their navigating the university curriculum towards a timely graduation.
