Reiche School
Howard C. Reiche Community School in the urban West End of Portland is ranked the most wonderfully diverse of all elementary schools in Maine, celebrating 16 different home languages and students from 21 different birth countries. About a quarter of our students are welcome newcomers. Our talented teaching staff use their impressive skills to provide a quality education for all of our students. OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE

Under the direction of the Lead Teachers, a Reiche classroom teacher plans, and provides for rigorous, engaging and joyful learning experiences for all students. The teacher fosters an environment that supports the intellectual, physical, social and emotional wellness and development of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student. In addition to supporting students? growth and well-being, our teachers also develop, select and modify district-provided instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of students? varying learning needs. Our teachers monitor and evaluate student growth and outcomes using standards based curriculum and guidelines. Classroom teachers are an integral member of the Reiche community and serve as a support to students? holistic well-being; teachers at Portland Public Schools thrive by having the opportunity to collaborate with students? families and caregivers and all relevant stakeholders in support of students? learning and social-emotional needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide differentiated and rigorous Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health, and SEL instruction to Grade 5 students using standards based curriculum and guidelines from Common Core, district provided materials etc, and provide developmentally appropriate and engaging learning activities.
Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use effective and culturally-relevant instructional practices and materials; actively create and maintain an environment in which students? diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected/embraced and celebrated.
Utilize high-quality curriculum materials and methods to develop engaging, rigorous assignments that guide, challenge and grow students.
Assess and ensure ongoing progress monitoring and evaluation in order to ensure all students - including English Language Learners and students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are achieving growth in alignment with their goals.
Foster an engaging and inclusive learning environment that establishes positive student expectations conducive to all learners' needs through developmentally appropriate routines, and positive classroom management practices.
Collaborate and communicate across your grade level team and school RTI team to ensure students receive necessary additional forms of academic assistance and/or relevant social-emotional support and alignment.
Collaborate and communicate with the students? families/caregivers and all relevant stakeholders to ensure relevant stakeholders are engaged in understanding and supporting the students? learning and social emotional needs. Regular newsletters to families as well as communication around absences and dismissal plans.
Attend school, district and state-sponsored professional development opportunities to stay current with changes in general elementary instruction and improvements in classroom teaching strategies.

Working knowledge of pertinent curriculum standards, techniques for integrating and adapting curriculum and effective instructional practices.
An understanding of the teaching and learning process, including the ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives as well as trauma-informed practices that engages culturally diverse populations.
A record of student achievement ensuring rigorous, culturally inclusive instruction using standards based curriculum and guidelines that correlates with developmentally appropriate and engaging learning activities.
Excellent human relations skills; the ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization

The salary for this position is based on experience and guided by the . We offer a comprehensive benefits plan, including health insurance, dental and vision insurance, paid time off and employer retirement contribution. We also offer a tuition reimbursement for one course per academic year.
