Job description: Under the guidance and supervision of the PRODIGY Program Director, this position is responsible for instructing children ages 7-17 in cultural arts and working closely with parents, program partners and community members in a culturally diverse setting. 80% of essential job functions are instruction/classroom management, 15% are Facility maintenance, and 5% are other instructor related duties as needed- i.e. participate in PRODIGY sponsored extracurricular events such as showcases.
Essential Functions
- Provide assistance to students to facilitate their understanding of course assignments.
- Facilitate student's engagement in artistic endeavors.
- Provide cultural arts instruction to PRODIGY youth ages 7-17, in a culturally relevant, child-centered format.
- Coordinate with Program Director to Design, Plan and Develop course curricula (through lesson plans) that identify and address prevention and intervention issues.
- Formulate lesson plans such that youth are challenged to discover their personal agency through creative expressions, and to develop identifiable life skills.
- Coordinate with PRODIGY program administrators to obtain necessary course materials and supplies.
- Conducts classroom activities according to PRODIGY program procedures, regulations and classroom rules.
- Maintains classroom order conducive to learning.
- Reports, in a timely manner, classroom incidents and students' progress to PRODIGY administrators.
- Monitors daily attendance, and verifies students' attendance records.
- Assigns tasks to classroom assistants and volunteers.
- Maintains clean, organized workspace.
- Maintains organization of classroom supplies and equipment.
- Tracks consumable materials to facilitate loss prevention.
- Informs PRODIGY administrators when materials need to be ordered or replaced.
- Reports any damaged or broken equipment to PRODIGY director.
- Adheres to PRODIGY program safety and security procedures and regulations.
- Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent in education and experience in an artistic discipline.
- Knowledge of classroom dynamics and ability to apply cultural sensitivity in a classroom setting.
- Skills in classroom communications and ability to communicate and relate to youth.
- Skills in communication with fellow employees, students, parents, program partners, researchers, and program administrators.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
- Ability to work with youth ages 7- 17.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to understand and apply program procedures, regulations and rules.
- Ability to interact with co-workers and students effectively in all types of situations.
- Experience working with children. 6 months of art, music or dance instruction experience or equivalent in education preferred.
