Position Summary

The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for a faculty position as curator of Historical Keyboards. This position is a twelve-month, tenure-ineligible, renewable position with an initial three-year appointment at the rank of Academic Specialist. The successful candidate will play an invaluable role in the Historical Performance Department in support of the performance and academic activities of the Jacobs School of Music by caring for the extensive collection of historical keyboard instruments.

Period Keyboard Collection: Students currently have regular or periodic access to 4 French doubles, 2 Flemish doubles, 5 Flemish singles, 4 Italian singles, 3 electronic and 2 mechanical continuo organs, 1 clavichord, and 2 fortepianos (one Bakeman and one Regier).

Responsibilities: tuning, voicing, maintenance and repair of the school's collection of harpsichords, fortepianos, and clavichords in order to achieve the highest possible level of musical performance; preparing instruments for performances and recordings; tuning and maintaining the practice room and studio instruments; responding to special requests from faculty and students regarding concert and practice instruments. Teaching a Harpsichord Tuning and Maintenance course with special emphasis on understanding and tuning historical temperaments by ear.

Basic Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of historical temperaments and styles of harpsichords and fortepianos. Four years of training and/or experience as a harpsichord/fortepiano technician. Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and communicate effectively with faculty, students, staff, and guest artists.
