Qualifications:
  • Current Mississippi Teacher?s license
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in teaching English as a Second Language (Mississippi 177 ESL Endorsement)
  • One to three years of experience in teaching

School Principal and ESL Director

JOB SUMMARY:
Teachers who specialize in ESL, or English as a Second Language, instruct students who are native speakers of other languages. ELs are English Learners. An ESL teacher is a specialized educator who works exclusively with students and families from linguistically diverse backgrounds. The ESL teacher works with students to improve their English language skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE REPONSIBILITIES:
  • ESL teachers can work at the elementary and secondary levels providing English instruction to classes or individual students.
  • ESL teachers may develop a curriculum that takes an overall approach to English study or they may focus on a specific aspect of language use,
such as life skills, literacy, or vocational and workplace
  • Classroom work can consist of rote pronunciation techniques, quizzes, textbooks, videos and computer lessons. Teachers often combine basic
studies with real-life interactions involving language use in different situations, such as shopping, schooling, job hunting or working with English-
speaking coworkers.
  • ESL teachers need to be knowledgeable of their students' culture and recognize differences that may affect a student's ability to acclimate to an
English-speaking environment.
  • Works with counselors and principals to identify eligible English Learners.
  • Conducts ELPT placement and annual assessments as prescribed by the Mississippi Department of Education.
  • Plans for and conducts ESL lessons to meet the needs to English Learners, small group, one-on-one, large group and using co-teaching with content
area teachers as deemed necessary.
  • Keeps certain databases up to date, for example, EL enrollment for reporting.
  • Keeps files up to date and orderly for parent and student support.
  • Plans and participates in parent meetings to support EL student achievement.
  • Works with the ESL Director to ensure a high-quality ESL program which is responsive to ELL student needs by attending meetings, submitting
documents for district office files, and submitting purchase orders for needed resources.
  • Attends and actively participates in professional development activities, staff meetings, serves on staff committees
  • Maintain records of student progress.
  • Communicates with mainstream teachers on a regular basis giving guidance in working with ELL students to enable these students to be successful
learners.
  • Performs all duties as assigned by the administrator.
