Located on about 426 acres in the West San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) combines state-of-the-art technology and learning with the picturesque beauty of its rolling hills. Founded in 1947 LAPC is a growing two-year public institution with more than 100 disciplines being taught to more than 20,000 students each semester and enjoys one of the highest transfer performances in Southern California. Seen as a leader statewide and nationally, LAPC is now seeking to expand its outstanding faculty by offering a full-time, American Sign Language Instructor in the Modern Language Department Department starting with the Spring 2024 semester.
JOB DESCRIPTION: LAPC is seeking applications for a full-time probationary tenure track position in American Sign Language beginning the Spring 2024 semester. This ten-month (C basis) academic position may include teaching day, evening, and weekend classes. The primary emphasis is teaching American Sign Language (ASL) and the growth and development of the ASL program, including the development of new courses and the updating of existing courses to ensure currency. The ideal candidate is a motivated and creative teacher who will serve as an inspiration to the students. The assignment may include teaching off-site or at high schools in addition to in-person, hybrid, and online classes at the college. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAPC includes lower division courses. Faculty members at LAPC are expected to foster student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Teach courses in ASL in accordance with established course outline;
- Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs);
- Teaching assignments may include online, hybrid, or classes taught at local high schools;
- Assess student performance;
- Develop and update department course curricula, including developing hybrid and/or online courses;
- Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;
- Participate in the development, revision, reporting, and assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs);
- Assist students with placement in ASL courses;
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline, teaching methods, instructional technology, and equitable pedagogies;
- Create an engaging and inclusive learning environment in all classes, regardless of modality, conducive to learning;
- Facilitate student achievement of certificates and degrees by assisting the department to advise, guide, and inform students of options and procedures.
- Participate in the program review annual update and in the comprehensive program review cycle;
- Maintain accurate records (e.g., grades, attendance, class exclusions, etc.) and submit records in a timely manner in accordance to district policy and board rules;
- Work collegially with members of the department, classified staff, students, faculty and administrators to maintain professional conduct and ethics, and foster a professional working environment;
- Advise, assist, and mentor students to promote student success;
- Complete and submit required documents in accordance with district policy;
- Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology (Pierce Online / Canvas) to teach students in a multicultural environment;
- Participate in campus responsibilities including department, college and/or district committees;
- Promote awareness of LAPC ASL classes at local high and middle schools.
- Assist with communication about ASL courses/programs/placement and ASL program scheduling.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or higher and two-years of professional experience, or any Associate degree and six-years of professional experience.
- Note: The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT AND COVID 19 VACCINATIONS:
A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in ASL/Deaf Studies Education, or equivalent;
- Experience teaching a wide range of courses in ASL, including but not limited to fingerspelling, conversation, deaf culture, etc.
- Native or near-native fluency in ASL;
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in ASL and related areas of interest;
- Flexibility to teach morning/afternoon/evening courses;
- Experience in teaching in-person, online, and hybrid modalities;
- Demonstrated proficiency in current teaching technologies and a willingness to embrace new teaching technologies as they become available;
- Demonstrated willingness to accept extracurricular responsibilities within the department and college;
- Experience teaching ASL in a community college or other college setting;
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborate with colleagues within the discipline and department;
- Experience teaching in-person, online, and hybrid modalities;
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborate with colleagues within the discipline and department;
- Willingness to explore new teaching methods to reach and support students in a multicultural environment;
- Demonstrated willingness to accept department and college-wide collegial responsibilities.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year. The district provides an excellent retirement and benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
