The Engine opened its doors in June of 2017 to founders of early-stage companies working on disruptive technology. Founded by MIT, The Engineâs mission is to provide capital, resources, and comprehensive support to help founders build the next generation of world-changing companies. Our 155,000 SF state-of-the-art facility in Central Square, Cambridge includes offices, meeting spaces, bio & chem labs, fabrication spaces, and prototyping labs.
About the Role
The Engine is looking for an engineer who is proactive, creative, personable, flexible, and reliable â and who is excited to help build a tough tech community. In this role the Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with the Engineering Manager to manage prototyping shops and equipment, reduce equipment downtime, and ensure that our space is safe, usable, and efficient. They will also work directly on prototype fabrication projects with the tough tech companies that utilize our space. We are looking for a safety-conscious, proactive, curious engineer who is excited to independently balance time between a variety of activities, including fabrication, maintenance, and technical instruction. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, a customer service orientation, and enjoy working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Areas of Responsibility
Train users of various skill levels to safely and appropriately utilize engineering equipmentDesign and/or fabricate prototype components in collaboration with resident companiesServe as the primary contact for all machine shop equipment maintenance (mills, lathes, saws, etc.)Provide support to resident companies on access, training, and troubleshooting of shop equipmentImprove or develop guides and protocols for engineering equipmentManage tool and consumable inventory to ensure continuity of supplies while maximizing cost efficienciesWork with resident companies and Engine EHS to ensure hazardous material complianceMaintain engineering fabrication facilities and general housekeeping Essential Qualifications
Mission-oriented, energetic and upbeat with the resilience and demeanor to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, while remaining calm and composedBachelorâs Degree or equivalent2+ years of professional experience as a mechanical engineer, machinist, or other technical roleThe ability to work in-person on a full-time basis from Monday through Friday, including occasional early mornings and eveningsExperience working safely with CNC mills, lathes, and other machine shop toolsExperience with a swath of rapid prototyping tools (3D printers, laser cutters, waterjet, breadboarding, microcontrollers, etc.)Experience with 3D-Modeling software (Solidworks, Fusion 360, OnShape, etc.)Experience in teaching technical skills (teaching fellowships, mentorship roles, leading technical teams, etc.)Experience with process improvement, lab management, and/or community buildingExcellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skillsAble to independently prioritize and follow objectives through to completionDetail-oriented and organized with solid time management skillsNatural curiosity about what our teams are doing and how to help themBring a fresh perspective and new ideas for improving experience and efficiency Additional Ideal Qualities
