The Computing Products department (CPD) has an opening for a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer in Cedar Rapids, IA. The CPD is a product development team within the Avionics business unit, in the Displays Computing, and Networking Directorate. This department is responsible for the development and sustainment of state-of-the-art avionics products (the “system”) including integrated processing cabinets, multifunction displays, processor, I/O, video, and graphics solutions, and control panels used in military fighter, fixed wing, and rotary wing aircraft platforms.

This position is for a product development oversite and certification lead. Candidates for the this role will have experience in multiple areas of design, test, verification and validation for a variety of technologies present in aircraft avionics (including hardware, platform software and middleware, and firmware components) along with certification experience under ARP4754A and DO-297. They will also have experience in coordinating and leading teams of engineers, identifying risk and opportunity in technical developments, meeting schedule commitments, and working in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead development of system test strategy and certification activities
  • Plan and lead the system certification events (SOI1, SOI2, SOI3, SOI4, TSO)
  • Support product architecture related to design for a successful certification strategy
  • Oversee the scheduling and maintenance of test equipment and assets
  • Primary point of contact for all certification related questions and issues
  • Mentor other systems engineers, collaborate closely with hardware, software, firmware
Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience
  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.
  • Demonstrated experience throughout the avionics equipment certification process
  • Experience with safety critical system, hardware, or software development (e.g. DO-178C, DO-254, or ARP4754A)
  • Excellent communication skills for both internal and external customers
  • Adaptable to change, determined to accomplish tasks based on program schedule, collaborate with teammates to make the best decisions, enjoy learning new technologies, be self-motivated and contribute to a positive work environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Collins Management System for bid and pursuit work
  • Experience working with and testing embedded hardware and software
  • Experience developing automated tests utilizing scripting

The salary range for this role is 112,000 USD - 236,000 USD; however, RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
