Engineer/Project Engineer

FUNCTION: The Project Engineer position is a development position for business applications geared towards steel manufacturing process improvement. The Project Engineer Analyst also will develop and implement lean manufacturing strategies that drive bottom-line improvements in manufacturing operations and related support centers. This role is accountable for sustaining our system of lean manufacturing. The Project Engineer will be responsible for driving quick Lean improvements in targeted departments. This position is generally a fast paced position that changes to meet the priority needs of manufacturing management and users. Will provide support to all Plants.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: The Project Engineer Analyst will report directly to the NJX General Manager, and work directly with other Plant Managers, Management Team Members, Project Engineers, Capex, and Corporate Personnel, as well as interact with members of Operations, Technology, Quality, Accounting, and Production Control.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific primary responsibilities are defined by the following, but those listed are not all-inclusive: Note that duties

shall be as assigned, with priorities subject to change due to business demands.

• Analyze reports to improve productivity and overall quality

• Use existing data systems to allow technical analysis of each process

• SPC (Statistical Process Control)

• Conduct data analysis systems with Automation Engineers L2 development data collection

• Provide training and support to end users

• Continuously investigate new technologies and understand how they could help add value to operations

• Troubleshoot, and improve existing databases and software

• Flexible Schedule to include providing occasional off-hour and fill-in support

• Provide support to all departmental personnel plant wide in observing, researching, obtaining, recording,

and producing required data

• Ensures a culture is in place that puts the safety and welfare of our employees ahead of all other goals.

• Effectively apply all aspects of Lean manufacturing in assigned manufacturing facilities and in related support functions.

• Partner with Plant Leaders to develop Continuous Improvement strategies that close key business gaps identified in Plant, then implement those strategies on the shop floor including the tools and processes required to sustain the improvements in the future

• Facilitate kaizens and focused C.I. events to implement improvement strategies on all shifts working closely with Manufacturing Supervisors and Operators.

• Support building a Lean culture by providing training and coaching to plant personnel on Lean theories, methodologies, and standards, with an emphasis on “Learn by Doing”. Utilize Train-the-Trainer techniques to transfer knowledge to department resources to enable self-sufficiency to launch future.

Lean improvements.

• Utilize Lean principles and Best Practices to establish new work standards for Machines, Processes, and People, to generate productivity savings, improve quality, and increase OTD.

• Develop metrics and dashboard measures that enable the entire plant population to understand key performance indicators and business gaps and take necessary actions to improve results.

• Reviews project proposal or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for

accomplishing projects, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of projects.

• Establishes work plan and multi-disciplinary staffing for each phase of project, and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project personnel.

• Confers with project staff to outline work plan and to assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.

• Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.

• Reviews status reports, prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules or plans as required.

• Prepares project reports for management, client, or others.

• Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems

• Experience in the preparation of management presentations.

• Working knowledge and experience with project management and project processes

• Strong analytical, interpersonal, PC and written/verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work in a team environment and build relationships across teams and divisions

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail under strict deadlines

• Able to manage to changing priorities in a fast paced environment.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

• Lean Manufacturing — Knowledge of theories, methodologies, standards, and tools.

• Leadership/Management of Personnel Resources — Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. Training and coaching plant personnel to achieve productivity savings using Lean principles and tools.

• Team Management – Superior interpersonal and teaming skills.

• Systems Evaluation — Identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed

to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.

• Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs,

and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

• Lean Tools — The ability to utilize Lean tools to generate meaningful, quantified improvement in: cost

reduction, efficiency, reduced inventory, shortened cycle or lead times, improved quality and reliability,

on-time delivery, or safety.

• Communication —the ability to communicate effectively with senior management (written and verbal).

• Judgment and Decision Making — Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

• Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

• Monitoring — Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering

2 years manufacturing experience or internship
