Position Summary



In support of Rice University's commitment to the success of all students, the goal of this position is to support creation of a coordinated, centralized, and equity-minded tutoring and supplementary instruction program that serves undergraduate students. The Assistant Director will oversee the extension and coordination of subject-focused coaching and tutoring services not already provided by Rice's writing and communication programs.



Reporting to the Senior Associate Provost, the Assistant Director will develop and maintain partnerships with academic schools and departments to identify academic support needs, create new tutoring options and augment existing tutoring and supplemental instruction programs. The incumbent will also partner with academic departments and student advising and success offices to recruit and hire peer tutors, as well as provide ongoing management of peer tutor training and scheduling. The incumbent will collaborate with existing tutoring programs and initiatives to develop, implement, and integrate equity-minded tutor training that is grounded in leading practices.



The Assistant Director must remain current on research, best practices and new initiatives regarding student learning, tutoring and academic support. The incumbent's responsibilities will include contributing to planning, programming, and development of an Academic Resources and Testing Center, and they will become an important member of the leadership team of the center.

Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree

  • Three years of experience in providing student support in a college or university setting



  • May substitute additional education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis in lieu of the experience requirement sessions.

  • Knowledge of student learning theories and pedagogies and high-impact practices

  • Experience organizing events and facilitating and leading workshops and information

  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently to handle multiple, complex tasks.

  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

Skills

  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and other university colleagues

  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Broad intellectual interests and the ability to advise students across a variety of disciplines

  • Ability to develop and initiate new programs

Essential Functions

  • Support and coordinate efforts by student success offices and academic departments to recruit and hire content tutors and TA's.

  • Collaborate with student learning and success offices and faculty to develop high-quality training workshops, onboarding processes, and other resources to equip tutors and TA's with the necessary skills and learning and communication strategies to provide effective support to student clients.

  • Liaise with Athletics, Student Success Initiatives (SSI), Academic Advising, and the Disabilities Resource Center to identify and respond to specific academic support needs of affinity groups.

  • Become proficient with Navigate and the WC Online scheduling system and maintain and monitor a streamlined scheduling/matching process for students requesting tutor support.

  • Manage student employees, providing support and feedback to improve tutoring services.

  • Maintain organized records for the management of student employees, including performance evaluation.

  • Collection and analysis of data to assess, refine and improve academic support services.

  • Develop semesterly reports to include programming, usage data, trends, impact of services on learners, and recommendations for future services.

  • Coordinate and collaborate on pertinent programming and communication with academic departments, student support offices, and student groups.

  • Monitor student worker timesheets and compensation against the academic resources program budget; prepare necessary documentation for supervisor review/approval; and make recommendations for expenditures to support the achievement of program goals.

  • Contribute to planning and programming for an academic resources and testing center.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Functions

  • Supervises 50+ student workers

Preferred experience and skills

  • Master's degree in education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field with applied knowledge of adult learning theory with a documented history of student support success

  • Experience working as a tutor and one year of experience supervising tutors or running a tutoring or other academic support program

  • Experience using WC Online scheduling software

  • Familiarity with Rice University academic culture and requirements

  • Experience as a student or employee at a highly selective college or university

  • Experience in higher education classroom, clinical, and/or online teaching

  • Experience with supervising student staff strongly preferred.
